Violence against women human rights defenders is infrequently acknowledged for what it is: a component of deliberate calculated strategies to silence them and to stop them from conducting their daily work to change society, save lives and claim justice.

Governing Women: Women's Political Effectiveness in Contexts of Democratization and Governance Reform
Using case studies from around the world, the essays in this volume, edited by Anne Marie Goetz, and published by UNRISD, consider the conditions for effective connections between women in civil society and women in politics, for the evolution of political party platforms responsive to women's interests, for local government arrangements that enable women to engage effectively, and for accountability mechanisms that answer to women.

Claiming Rights, Claiming Justice: A Guidebook on Women Human Rights Defenders
This guide aims to help women human rights defenders name the specific risks, violations and constraints they face in their work. It presents a practical discussion of the useful mechanisms developed by the state and also by civil society to provide redress and remedy and to protect women human rights defenders. It is intended to be used by human rights and other organisations to further a gender perspective in the monitoring and documentation of human rights.
The guidebook was produced by the Asia Pacific Forum for Women, Law and Development (APWLD) in close collaboration with individuals and organisations that have participated in the international campaign for women human rights defenders since 2005. The Circle of Empowerment: Twenty-five Years of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women
This book of essays and personal reflections written by 42 former and current members of CEDAW's Committee and 5 UN staff members reveals the profound impact this Convention has had on women's lives around the world. With examples and moving reminiscences from Korea to Egypt, from Russia to the Caribbean and beyond, this collection addresses CEDAW's effect on women in the contexts of personal status laws, labour markets, migration, human trafficking, politics, as well as the obstacles created by cultural stereotypes. Achieving Women's Economic and Social Rights: Strategies and Lessons from Experience is a new report from the Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) provides insights from feminist activists working in diverse settings all over the world on the strategies they have found most useful in their efforts to improve economic and social rights for women.
